TrendForce Estimates 2015 LED Industrial Lighting Market to Reach US$2.366B due to Maturing Technology and Right Prices

LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, reports that industrial lighting has a decisive weight in the entire lighting market LEDinside has released its latest “1Q15 Silver Member Market Report - Industrial Lighting and High Bay Markets”, which shows an intense level of price competition in the market for LED replacement lighting products, including LED light bulbs and light tubes sold in retail stores More and more LED lighting vendors hope to capitalize on the situation by entering the industrial lighting sector Based on LEDinside’s forecast, LED industrial lighting market scale will be worth US$2366 billion in 2015 and by 2018 the scale will reach US$3935 billion  LEDinside’s Assistant Research Manager Joanne Wu said compared with home lighting products, industrial lighting products operate under much longer period, so switching to the energy-saving LED technology in the latter application is more cost-effective As a result, LED high and low bay lighting fixtures have become more attractive for industrial lighting users for replacement purposes Furthermore, LED lighting products have seen additional increases in performance and decreases in price These improvements, together with industrial lighting products’ high profit margins, have made industrial application the most competitive market for LED package and LED luminaire companies for the 2015-2016 period  Among different fixture types, LED high/low bay lighting products are the largest in terms of market share This category is further subdivided into mining and general application (or for uses in warehouses, gyms, and other indoor settings) Thus, LED high/low bay lights are now a major focus in the development of industrial lighting market Without the need to warm up, LED lights are instantly bright the moment it is switched on and instantly goes dim at switch-off This advantage, plus LED’s long lifespan, reduce maintenance costs significantly Therefore, LED is more cost-effective than HID under long and continuous usage  It is expected 80W-250W LED high/low bay light products will become mainstream in the market as improvements are made to the LED technology itself and to thermal dissipation Current 80W-250W LED high/low bay lights have around 10,000lm-30,000lm in terms of luminous flux as well as 275-300lx in terms of illuminance Pricing strategies for high/low bay lights vary according to products lines and market regions as these products have yet to be standardized Chinese manufacturers tend to have lower product prices and fewer product lines Hence, prices in the Chinese market only show minor price fluctuations  Leaders in LED industrial lighting include American manufacturers such as GE Lighting, CREE, and Cooper Lighting have performed well in the market, as well as their Japanese counterparts IWASAKI and Toshiba, and Chinese LED manufacturer Ocean’s King Lighting Among these competitors, CREE has made advances with high-power LEDs that save costs and simplify product designs GE Lighting by contrast focuses on LED module adoption and thermal dissipation design Their luminaires can have a life of up to 100,000 hours

TrendForce Expects Epistar and TSMC’s Cross-Industry Alliance Will Speed Up Changes and Innovations in the LED Industry

Epistar Corp and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) Board of Directors held simultaneous meetings to approve the sale of all shares of TMSC Solid State Lighting (TSMC SSL)  to Epistar at NT$ 146 per share, with the total price amounts to NT$ 825 million Epistar will control 94% of TSMC SSL holdings after this acquisition While TSMC will completely relinquish its control of TSMC SSL, the business operations will be jointly manned by the present TSMC SSL team and Epistar personnel  Epistar’s first announcement in 2015 came soon after its last year’s merger with FOREPI in order to increase production capacity, manage cost, and consolidate orders and product lines “This merger shows that Epistar is moving away from the LED business model and learning the operation management of semiconductor manufacturing by marshalling TSMC organizational talents,” said Joanne Wu, Associate Manager of LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce  Epistar is also presently moving away from 6" sapphire wafer production, and with this newest merger it will be able to race ahead of the learning curve for the manufacturing of larger wafers and make further advancements in wafer level package At the same time, Epistar’s acquisition also show that it has created a geographical advantage to reach its epi wafer production target, considering that TSMC SSL has the sophisticated facilities and the perfect location to establish a firm production base close to home  LEDinside expects this cross-sector will be advantageous for Epistar in technology and client base Anticipate sparks of innovations and potential improvements in the industry

TrendForce: Highly Profitable UV LED Market Value Reaches US $122M in 2014

The global Ultraviolet (UV) market value in 2014 is estimated to reach US $815 million, in which the UV LED market has about a 15% market share or equivalent to $122 million market value, according to the latest report “2015 LED Demand and Supply Market Outlook” published by LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce  “UV LED single unit prices are usually ten times higher than average LEDs, which is why many LED manufacturers have entered the market, even though it remains a relatively niche sector,” said Joanne Wu, an assistant research manager at LEDinside Major players in the UV LED sector include Japanese manufactures Nichia and DOWA, Korean manufacturers Seoul Semiconductor and LG Innotek, Taiwanese manufacturers Epistar, Epileds, and  HPLighting Other European and US manufacturers include HexaTech and Crystal IS All the manufacturers listed above have been strong performers in the UV LED market  UV rays have always existed in nature, and is an invisible light source There are two types of UV light sources including traditional mercury lamps and UV LED “Compared to traditional mercury lamps, UV LEDs are mercury free, and have the advantages of being environmental friendly, possessing long lifetimes, energy efficient, and having minimum heat loss,” said Wu UV LED markets hold great potential, due to technology advancements  UV LED product specs can be categorized into three different wavelengths UV-A (long UV wavelength of 320-400 nanometers (nm)), UV-B (mid-UV wavelengths of 280-320 nm) and UV-C (short UV wavelengths below 280 nm) Out of these UV-A had the greatest and highest market share of 90% Currently, UV-A market’s largest application sector has been UV curing, which takes up more than 50% market applications, which covers Ink curing, resin curing, and the emerging 3D printing sector Additionally, UV-A has been introduced in commercial lighting to make white clothing appear brighter Globally, Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) UV exposure system still use conventional mercury lights However, under energy efficiency and technology advancement considerations, UV LED is gradually entering the replacement market, and holds huge future potential  Due to UV LED products high technology entry level, including the product’s UV wavelength, intensity and thermal dissipation system Additionally, if UV LED manufacturers must be capable of customizing products and simulating optical design to meet system client needs, to create a highly profitable blue sea market

TrendForce: As LED Lighting Penetration Surges, Dominant Players to Maintain Market Share

TrendForce: Global LED Lighting Market to Reach US $25.7 Billion in 2015

The global LED lighting market will reach $257 billion dollars and its market penetration will increase to 31% in 2015 as the overall lighting market grows to $821 billion, according to a new report by LEDinside, a division of the Taiwan-based market intelligence firm TrendForce  Europe is the largest LED lighting market It comprises 23% of the global LED lighting market despite its high electricity prices and lack of large-scale subsidies for LED lighting users, said Joanne Wu, an assistant manager at LEDinside, adding that Europe’s demand for LED lighting for commercial and architectural lighting applications is increasing  China comprises 21% of the overall LED lighting market As the manufacturing base of most LED lighting producers, China boasts a complete LED supply chain and many cost advantages Traditional lighting manufacturers, lighting OEMs, emerging LED lighting manufacturers, and LED packaging manufacturers all are expanding their LED lighting businesses This year, developing viable channel distribution is a top priority for vendors in China Looking ahead to 2015, the lighting market in China should continue to grow on the back of stable demand for lighting However, since the market is highly competitive and there is little variation in product quality among different manufacturers, vendors will compete mainly on price, making the probability of a price war high, Wu said At the same time, without proper distribution channels, manufacturers will be forced to exit the market, she added  The United States holds 19% of the overall LED lighting market Currently, there is a push in the industry to obtain certification from the US Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star and the DesignLights Consortium (DLC), a US-based non-profit organization Firms which receive certification from these organizations are eligible for subsidies from local utilities providers Additionally, LED lighting product quality is improving, helping commercial LED lighting in the US grow The fastest-growing segment is light tubes  Japan has just 9% of the global LED lighting market Indeed, the Japanese LED lighting market is relatively mature LED commercial lighting is already common in Japan’s schools, hospitals and retail chain stores Still, the outdoor and industrial LED lighting segments have considerable potential to expand  Emerging markets, including Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Latin America, comprise 28% of the global LED lighting market Looking ahead to 2015, growth prospects in these markets are especially promising because of rapid population growth, favorable government policies and an abundance of private-sector LED lighting projects
