The latest analysis “1Q17 Micro LED Next Generation Display Industry” by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, make a further analysis on the Micro LED industry. Judging by current technology, how to transfer Micro LED will be the biggest challenge. In addition, according to current players, the technology value chain is coming into existence. Four key technologies include: the production of epi wafer for micron-size chips, the bonding of the chips, the transferring of micro-LEDs to panel substrates, and color conversion.
According to LEDinside’s analysis on the patents owned by 10 investigated transfer manufacturers and categorized by their patent content, LuxVue possess a large number of transfer patents, and X-Celeprint followed.

Apple acquired LuxVue for its great technical potential in Micro LED filed, LuxVue has mastered the key transfer technology, which is the most difficult step for the current development of Micro LED. Moreover, circuit driver, color conversion, detection and the uniformity of wafer wavelength are technical bottlenecks remaining to be overcome. LuxVue filed transfer technology patent initially, extending toward driver, application and other patented technologies later, and it has acquired 65 patents of Micro LED in three years. LuxVue transfers 1μm-100μm LED chip to the target substrate through electrostatic adsorption and temporary substrate carrier.
The existing mass transfer technology developed by manufacturers mainly includes transfer method, transfer equipment and suction nozzle. But finally it is subject to that how to improve the transfer yield to 99.9999% and the precision of each chip must be within ±0.5μm,which is the key challenge for all manufacturers.
