According to a report from Liberty Times, citing Financial Times, Apple aims to launch its own AI model, Apple Intelligence, in China. However, the company faces significant challenges in securing official approval. Without collaboration with local enterprises, the approval process is expected to be particularly difficult, as the report notes.

The report highlights that Apple CEO Tim Cook visited China on Monday (25th), marking his third trip to the country this year. Apple aims to integrate Apple Intelligence into its products sold in China and is currently navigating the challenges posed by the country’s regulatory framework, as the report indicates.

Over recent months, Apple has been in negotiations with Chinese tech companies to support the deployment of Apple Intelligence in China, while the report notes that Apple has introduced its AI model in the U.S. since October.

According to the report, a Chinese official told Financial Times that foreign companies like Apple will face a lengthy and complex approval process if they wish to run their own AI models in China. The official suggested that partnering with local entities would be their best option, making the approval path smoother, as the report points out.

Notably, the report, citing sources, indicates that Apple is also considering operating its own large language model (LLM) in China.

However, the report further notes, citing a senior official at the Cyberspace Administration of China, that using already-approved LLMs from Chinese companies will facilitate a “simpler and more straightforward approval process” for foreign companies.
