Japanese foundry Rapidus plans to commence mass production of 2nm chips by 2027. According to a report by MoneyDJ, citing Nikkei, U.S. semiconductor giant Broadcom is expected to become a customer of Rapidus’ 2nm chips. The report states that Rapidus aims to supply 2nm chip samples to Broadcom by June. Following Broadcom’s verification of the chips’ performance, Rapidus will reportedly be commissioned for production.
The report further notes that Rapidus is scheduled to begin trial production for 2nm chips in April 2025. To stabilize its operations and achieve profitability, Rapidus must secure major customers.
Broadcom, ranked as the fifth-largest semiconductor company globally, operates as a fabless semiconductor company specializing in designing chips for data centers, according to the report. Broadcom’s clients include major tech companies such as Google and Meta. Collaborating with Broadcom could allow Rapidus to expand its reach and supply chips to Broadcom’s clients, the report points out.
The report also mentions that TSMC is set to begin mass production of 2nm chips in 2025. However, with limited production capacity, TSMC is expected to prioritize major companies, leaving room for competitors like Rapidus to address unfulfilled demand.
Prior to Broadcom, Rapidus’ clients are more oriented towards start-ups or local firms. On January 8, Rapidus announced a basic agreement with Japanese unicorn AI startup Preferred Networks (PFN) and Japanese AI service provider Sakura Internet, as the report from MoneyDJ notes. This collaboration aims to establish a domestically produced AI infrastructure. According to its press release, PFN’s latest AI processor, the most advanced in the “MN-Core series,” will be manufactured by Rapidus and deployed in Sakura Internet’s data centers.
