According to a recent post by MacRumors on January 17, Apple is reportedly planning to launch a second-generation Studio Display in 2025. This updated model is expected to feature Mini LED backlighting and support a 90Hz refresh rate.
As early as April 2023, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst from Tianfeng Securities, had hinted that Apple would begin mass producing a 27-inch Mini LED external monitor by late 2024 or early 2025, delivering enhanced brightness and contrast.
Additionally, an anonymous tipster on the RelayFM “Upgrade” podcast revealed that Apple is developing 90Hz display technology, which may debut in the next Studio Display.
While a 90Hz refresh rate would improve smoothness when scrolling or navigating content, it still falls short of the 120Hz ProMotion technology found in advanced iPhones and Macs. Even so, it would mark a significant improvement over the current Studio Display’s capabilities.
The original Studio Display launched in March 2022 alongside the first Mac Studio, featuring a 27-inch LCD screen with 5K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, P3 wide color gamut, up to 600 nits of brightness, a built-in camera and speakers, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. In China, the Studio Display starts at RMB 11,499.
However, MacRumors also noted that Apple’s premium Pro Display XDR has not received any hardware updates since its release in 2019, suggesting the possibility that Apple might keep the Studio Display unchanged for several more years.
