In 2017, Google acquired part of HTC’s smartphone business team for USD 1.1 billion. Today, a similar deal has been announced. According to TechNews, HTC has signed an agreement with Google, under which Google will pay USD 250 million. The agreement includes the transfer of some members of HTC’s XR team to Google and grants Google a non-exclusive license to HTC’s XR intellectual property.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in Q1 2025, as HTC’s press release notes.
The agreement will strengthen HTC’s strategy in the XR ecosystem, enabling a more streamlined product portfolio focused on platforms, improved operational efficiency, and enhanced financial flexibility, as its press release indicates. HTC will continue investing in its comprehensive VIVE XR solutions, such as the VIVE Focus Vision.
For Google, as stated in its press release, this agreement enhances its commitment to the Android XR platform and supports its development across the headset and glasses ecosystem.
The TechNews report notes that last year, Google, Qualcomm, and Samsung announced a collaboration to launch Android XR and plans to introduce new head-mounted display devices in 2025.
