Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, with its budget-friendly AI model, is generating a real buzz around the globe. According to a report from China’s mydrivers, DeepSeek has surpassed 20 million daily active users (DAU) just 20 days after its launch, reaching 40% of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Notably, this also makes it the fastest-growing AI application in terms of DAU worldwide, as highlighted by another report from the Economic Daily News.
According to data cited by mydrivers, as of January 31, the top three AI applications globally by DAU were ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and ByteDance’s Doubao, respectively.
The DeepSeek app, launched on January 11, reached 22.15 million daily active users just 21 days after its launch. That’s 41.6% of ChatGPT’s 53.23 million users, the report adds.
Before DeepSeek made its appearance, ByteDance’s Doubao used to be the most popular AI app in China. However, in January, DeepSeek, with its 22.15 million DAUs, surpassed Doubao’s 17 million, according to Tech in Asia.
As of January 31, DeepSeek performed exceptionally well in the Apple App Store, ranking No.1 in 157 countries and regions, including the key U.S. market, as noted by mydrivers.
Meanwhile, a Cailian Press report, citing SimilarWeb, states that DeepSeek’s website outpaced Google’s Gemini in users within a week. On January 31, DeepSeek.com saw 2.4 million U.S. daily visits—60% more than Gemini’s 1.5 million.
The Economic Daily News report also points out that DeepSeek has quickly driven a response from Chinese companies, with cloud platforms from Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba announcing integration of the model. Meanwhile, China’s four major GPU manufacturers—Huawei’s Ascend, Moore Threads, Shanghai’s iluvatar, and MetaX—have also pledged support for DeepSeek’s development, the report adds.
