Following Huawei’s launch of the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, Mate XT, in last September, Samsung has also geared up for its new tri-fold model. According to a report from South Korean media outlet The Elec, the company is expected to start component production in the second quarter of 2025.
Notably, Samsung aims to ship a total of 7 million foldable phones in 2025, while it plans to produce roughly 200K units of the new tri-fold smartphone, as per The Elec. Primary vendors for the tri-fold smartphone and Fold 7 have been selected, and Samsung is now choosing secondary vendors, the report suggests.
For reference, Huawei was expected to ship 500K to 1 million units of its Mate XT tri-folding smartphone in 2024, as noted by Chinese media outlet Huawei Central.
The Elec also reveals that unlike Huawei’s Mate XT, which has both an infolding and an outfolding hinge, Samsung’s model only features an infolding hinge. Infolding hinges and screens are more challenging to design because the middle of the screen would fold inward, the report adds.
For more detail, Samsung’s new tri-folding model will reportedly resemble Samsung Display’s Flex G foldable display. Additionally, it is said to feature a screen just under 10 inches, slightly smaller than the Mate XT’s 10.2-inch screen, according to The Elec.
According to TrendForce, Samsung, a trailblazer in the foldable phone market, commanded over 80% of the market share in 2022. However, with increasing competition from various brands in 2023-24, Samsung’s share dropped from 60% and it now struggles to maintain 50%.
On the other hand, TrendForce notes that Apple is still evaluating component specifications and performance, with strict requirements for crease and reliability. Thus, it is unlikely to release a foldable phone before 2027, but its entry could significantly shift market dynamics.
