[News] China Reportedly Imposes Mandatory AI Model Reviews on ByteDance, Alibaba, and Others

According to a report from global media outlet Financial Times citing sources, Chinese authorities plan to implement mandatory reviews of large AI models. Reportedly, Chinese government officials are testing the large language models of AI companies to ensure that the systems embody core socialist values.

The Cyberspace Administration of China is said to have required major tech companies such as ByteDance, Alibaba, Moonshot, and 01.AI, as well as AI startups, to participate in these mandatory reviews.

Sources indicate that this effort involves testing a range of responses from the large AI  models, including those on politically sensitive topics in China and related to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Officials from the Cyberspace Administration of China’s local branches are conducting the reviews, examining the models’ training data and other security processes.

A Hangzhou-based AI company reported that the Cyberspace Administration has dedicated teams for this task, who visit offices to conduct audits. The company mentioned that their first review did not pass, and after months of adjustments and communication with peers, they passed the second review.

Regarding the aforementioned matter, the Cyberspace Administration, ByteDance, Alibaba, Moonshot, Baidu, and 01.AI have not yet responded.

[News] Korean Semiconductor Exports Hit a New High, with Memory Shipment up by 88.7%

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency, data released by Korea’s Ministry of Science and information and communication technology ICT on July 15 shows that in the first half of this year, Korea’s ICT industry exports grew by 28.2% YoY to USD 108.85 billion, setting the second-highest record for the same period in history.

Fueled by demands in the AI, IT information technology, and telecommunications equipment markets, semiconductor exports, one of Korea’s main export products, surged by 49.9% YoY, reaching USD 65.83 billion.

On a market segment basis, Korea’s memory exports in the first half of the year saw a hike of 88.7% YoY, driven by increased exports of products like high bandwidth memory (HBM).

Due to increased investment in server and data center as well as increased demand for personal computer and other devices, exports of computers and peripheral devices rose by 35.6% YoY; instead, mobile phone exports decreased by 2.8% YoY to USD 5.58 billion.

In June, ICT exports grew by 31.1% YoY, reaching USD 21.05 billion, the highest value for the same month in history. Semiconductor exports were USD 13.44 billion, also setting a record high for the same month. Notably, memory chip exports soared by 85.2% YoY, reaching USD 8.83 billion.

[News] Fuelled by AI Features, Apple’s iPhone 16 Shipments Reportedly to Increase by 10%

According to a report from Commercial Times, Apple is said to have informed its suppliers and partners that it is confident in boosting sales of the upcoming iPhone 16, set to be released in the second half of this year, through the addition of AI features. Reportedly, the goal is to increase iPhone 16 shipments by approximately 10% compared to the iPhone 15, reaching 90 million units in the second half of this year.

Apple showcased its advancements in AI at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, including the introduction of the generative AI large model Apple Intelligence, AI upgrades for Siri, and collaboration with OpenAI. Apple is expected to launch Apple Intelligence in the U.S. market this fall, with full functionality projected to be available in the spring of next year.

Per sources cited by Bloomberg, Apple did not perform well in the second half of last year, particularly facing challenges in its third-largest market, China. Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro, equipped with a domestically manufactured 7nm processor, has gained favor among local consumers.

The same report from Bloomberg indicated that after a turbulent 2023, Apple is relying on AI services to boost demand for its new products. Data cited by Bloomberg shows that in the second half of last year, iPhone 15 shipments were approximately 81 million units.

Furthermore, for the first quarter this year, TrendForce reported that Apple also faced a decline in sales in the Chinese market, resulting in a drop in annual production to 47.9 million units. This decline prompted several adjustments within the component supply chain, although production plans for processor chips remained unchanged. TrendForce posits that the second quarter falls within a product iteration gap for Apple, and production is expected to decrease by approximately 10%.

[News] TSMC and Intel Boost Their 2025 Capital Spending to Lead in the AI Era

The semiconductor industry, driven by AI, is entering a new upward cycle. According to a forecast report from SEMI, after the trough in 2023, the total sales of equipment in 2024 will hit a new high, with growth momentum continuing into 2025. Among this trend, per a report from Commercial Times, major companies including TSMC, Intel, Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron are all actively preparing, with plans to continue increasing capital expenditure next year in preparation for the AI era.

TSMC and Intel are the most proactive foundries. Intel plans to increase its capital expenditure by 2% in 2024, reaching USD 26.2 billion; TSMC’s capital expenditure for this year is expected to be between USD 28 billion and USD 32 billion.

The same report further cited sources, indicating that TSMC’s capital expenditure this year will reach the upper end of the estimated range. Next year, the upper limit is expected to increase by another USD 5 billion to USD 37 billion, potentially reaching the second-highest level in its history.

It’s reported that customer demand for TSMC’s 2nm process capacity has exceeded expectations. In addition to Apple securing the first batch of TSMC’s 2nm capacity, non-Apple customers are also actively planning for advanced processes. TSMC continues to advance its goal of mass production of the 2nm process by next year.

Another source cited by Commercial Times reveals that TSMC accelerated equipment orders in the second quarter and further increased momentum in the third quarter, primarily to ensure the smooth launch of the 2nm process by mid-next year.

In the HBM sector, Samsung and SK hynix are reportedly raising funds to prepare for significant production expansion in 2025.  A report from Korean media outlet Korea Economic Daily (KED) indicated that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are considering applying for loans from the Korea Development Bank, with planned loan amounts of KRW 5 trillion (roughly USD 3.6 billion) and KRW 3 trillion (roughly USD 2.2 billion), respectively.

Micron’s capital expenditure plan for the 2024 fiscal year is about USD 8 billion. In the fourth quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, Micron will spend approximately USD 3 billion on fab construction and new wafer fab equipment (WFE). For the 2025 fiscal year, Micron plans to significantly increase its capital expenditure, targeting 30% of its revenue, or about USD 12 billion. Earlier, Micron’s Chief Operating Officer, Manish Bhatia, stated that the scale of the HBM business is expected to expand to several billion dollars in the 2025 fiscal year.

[News] Samsung Officially Secures Its First 2nm Order, Making AI Chips for Preferred Networks

Samsung Electronics has received the first client for its 2nm process. According to the official press release from Samsung on July 9th, Samsung Electronics will provide turnkey semiconductor solutions using the 2nm process and the advanced 2.5D packaging technology Interposer-Cube S (I-Cube S) to Japanese AI company Preferred Networks.

Per a previous report by SamMobile, Samsung is set to commence mass production of 2nm chips for mobile devices by 2025. The initial SF2 2nm process will be ready next year, followed by an enhanced version, SF2P, in 2026. In addition, according to Samsung’s press release, its latest 2nm process, SF2Z, has incorporated optimized backside power delivery network (BSPDN) technology, and will enter mass production in 2027.

Preferred Networks was founded in 2014 and is in the field of AI deep learning development. The company has attracted significant investments from major Japanese industrial enterprises such as Toyota, NTT, and Fanuc. The order placed with Samsung’s foundry division for 2-nanometer AI chips also includes HBM and advanced packaging.

As per the official release, Junichiro Makino, VP and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Computing Architecture at Preferred Networks stated that as Samsung Electronics’ 2nm GAA process will significantly support Preferred Networks’ ongoing efforts to build highly energy-efficient, high-performance computing hardware that meets the ever-growing computing demands from generative AI technologies, especially large language models.

Driven by the strong demand from AI chips, Samsung expects the revenue of global chip industry to grow to USD 778 billion by 2028, according to Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of the Foundry Business in Samsung, the report noted.
