According to a report from TechNews, citing Korean media outlet The Elec, Apple was exploring two options for applying the color filter to the OLED panel intended for the more affordable Vision Pro device.
The report from The Elec indicates that this yet-to-be-named MR device from Apple will use a panel that is based on a glass board with white OLED deposited on it, topped by an RGB color filter to create various colors—a method known as W-OLED+CF. For resolution, Apple is thinking about 1,500ppi.
The report points out that since this device will use a glass board, it is not OLEDoS (OLED on silicon), different from the current Vision Pro that uses Sony’s OLEDoS technology with a resolution of 3,400ppi.
The report mentions that Apple is considering two approaches to apply the color filter
for this new device. The first approach is to directly form the color filter on the thin-film encapsulation (TFE) that covers the panel. The second, more standard approach, involves forming the color filter on a glass board and then combining it with another glass board with W-OLED deposited on it, making the W-OLED glass board the base and the color filter board the top.
Apple is leaning towards the first approach—forming the filter directly on TFE—as it would require only one glass board, making the MR device thinner, according to the report from The Elec.
However, the color filter formation of TFE demands a low-temperature process to avoid damaging the OLED, which makes it more challenging, as the report from The Elec mentions. Samsung currently uses this technique of directly forming the color filter on its foldable phones, which is known as color filter on encapsulation (CoE).
However, according to the report, Apple aims for a resolution of 1,500ppi, but the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 inner panel has a resolution of just 374ppi. To achieve such high resolution, additional technological costs will be involved.
The report indicates that Samsung remains the most likely supplier of W-OLED+CF panels for Apple’s new MR product.

Apple is reportedly shifting its mixed reality (MR) device strategy by abandoning the development of its existing high-end Vision Pro headset in favor of launching an affordable MR device expected to debut next year. According to a report from Economic Daily News, it’s rumored that Foxconn is likely to replace Luxshare as the manufacturer for Apple’s affordable MR device, although Foxconn typically refrains from commenting on order specifics and client relationships.
Alongside this move, Apple reportedly plans to incorporate AI capabilities into the product, which is anticipated to significantly boost sales of the affordable MR device. Per the sources cited by the same report, they are optimistic that companies like Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) and GIS Industries are poised to benefit from the opportunities.
According to a report from tech media outlet The Information citing sources, Apple initially planned to release two versions of the Vision device, akin to the standard and Pro versions of the iPhone. However, Apple is said to have informed at least one supplier to halt the development of the next-generation high-end Vision Pro headset.
Recently, Apple has planned to launch the USD 3,500 Vision Pro in eight new markets, including China and Japan. However, The Information, citing a source from a supplier, reported that after receiving Apple’s forecast of weakened demand for the Vision Pro by August, the supplier cut production by half in May.
The sole supplier, which has no competitors, produced approximately 460,000 Vision Pro components in the first four months of this year and plans to produce an additional 100,000 components from May to August. This suggests that Apple expects to produce at most around 500,000 units this year, with no significant production increase before August.
The Information revealed that Apple started developing a more affordable version of the Vision product in 2022, internally codenamed “N109.” According to the report, Apple is also trying to reduce the weight of the budget version by at least one-third compared to the Vision Pro. It is further reported that Foxconn will replace Luxshare as the manufacturer for Apple’s affordable MR device.
Industry sources cited by the same report indicated that Apple has already announced Apple Intelligence, confirming that AI applications will be integrated into all future devices. The next generation of MR devices, featuring more AI functions and applications along with a more affordable price, is expected to boost demand and significantly increase shipment volumes, benefiting Foxconn.
Other Taiwanese collaborators are also poised to benefit. GSEO has gradually been obtaining orders from the supply chains of Sony, Meta, and Apple, providing lenses and components for VR/MR headsets. GSEO expects VR-related applications to account for 20-30% of its revenue this year.
GIS plays a crucial role in the Vision Pro supply chain, handling the most technically challenging lens bonding tasks. Its production base is located in Chengdu, China, and it is generally anticipated to be part of the supply chain for Apple’s affordable MR headset as well.

In June of last year, the company announced the launch of new software tools and technologies, enabling developers to craft app experiences tailored for Vision Pro. Considering factors such as pricing and the absence of certain essential features, TrendForce has previously anticipated a modest shipment volume of approximately 200,000 – 400,000 units for Apple Vision Pro in 2024.

VR devices are expected to shoulder the majority of this decline, with projected shipments hovering around 6.67 million units.
Conversely, shipments of AR devices are expected to remain stable, with projected shipments exceeding 780,000 units. While Apple’s latest offerings could stimulate some demand, the high price tags attached to these units continue to pose a significant barrier to broader market growth.
TrendForce posits that the trajectory of the VR and AR device market may encounter certain limitations between 2023 and 2025. While affordable VR devices could pique the interest of mainstream consumers, the prospect of minimal profitability might dissuade manufacturers from substantial investment in the VR market in the immediate future. A shift towards AR devices and their corresponding applications seems more probable.

Will AIGC Bring New Development Boost to MR?
According to TrendForce, it is difficult to see AIGC exerting influence in the MR field in the short term due to the need for corresponding AI models and tools to be established. Currently, the AR/VR market is not large, and coupled with the complexity of content development, it is challenging to attract AIGC’s development in this area in the short term.
Furthermore, the complexity and cost of entry into the MR field, along with limited market size, have caused many brand manufacturers to focus on small-scale commercial products. This is because such products have a high unit price and low quantity, allowing manufacturers to control the total cost within a manageable range while capitalizing on the AR/VR industry trend. However, it does not mean that manufacturers are willing to heavily invest in this market.
Overall, this is the biggest difference in strategy between Apple and these manufacturers. Apple indeed wants to aggressively develop the AR market, but the lack of market understanding and content applications led to the introduction of developer products like Vision Pro. The purpose is twofold: to allow developers to advance in content application development and to gather feedback on hardware design and features used by developers. This feedback helps Apple determine which hardware design and features to retain or discard when launching new consumer products that closely align with content application needs.
