[News] Macbook Manufacturing Adds Another Supplier: Wingtec Makes the List

According to a report by Taiwan’s Economic Daily, the share of Chinese companies in Apple’s laptop manufacturing has expanded. After Luxshare secured assembly contracts for AirPods and iPhones, Chinese ODM Wingtec has commenced mass production of the 13-inch MacBook Air at its Kunming facility in Yunnan province, gradually eroding the historical market share of Taiwanese manufacturers like Foxconn and Quanta.

Both Foxconn and Quanta have exhibited relatively conservative stances towards the laptop market this quarter. Apple’s suppliers has typically refrained from commenting on competitor dynamics and single customer order trends. Quanta believes that the laptop market’s recovery is sluggish, with laptop shipments anticipated to decrease by 20% in the coming year. Additionally, the shift of certain Chromebook orders to an early June shipment date, coupled with a high base effect, is expected to result in a decline in the company’s laptop shipments this quarter.

On the other hand, at Foxconn, Chairman Young Liu previously stated that the company aimed to secure a larger market share in the personal computer (PC) segment. However, the decelerating momentum in the laptop industry demand is expected to persist into the latter half of the year. As a result, the third-quarter performance of the computer division is projected to remain on par with the second quarter while experiencing a decline compared to the same period last year.

Presently, Quanta is the largest assembly factory for Apple laptops, followed by Foxconn. According to China’s quality certification center, Wingtec has obtained a 3C quality certificate for its mass production of MacBook Air equipped with Apple’s M2 chip at the Kunming facility.

In the past, Apple’s MacBook Air product line was manufactured by both Foxconn and Quanta. Wingtec is the sole Chinese factory among Apple’s laptop manufacturers. Wingtec, known for its expertise in smartphone manufacturing, announced in April of this year that it secured Samsung’s 2023 smartphone and tablet ODM orders. In recent years, Wingtec has expanded its business scope to include semiconductors through acquisitions of automotive electronics firm Nexperia, successfully entering Apple’s supply chain.

Industry sources indicate that Apple is committed to diversifying MacBook laptop production to include various locations across China. Over the years, Apple has aimed to expand MacBook laptop production to more countries and companies. Analysts speculate that Apple’s ultimate plan is to allocate 55% of MacBook manufacturing to Quanta, 35% to Foxconn, and 10% to Wingtec.

[News] Foxconn Secures Major NVIDIA Order, Leads in AI Chip Base Boards

According to a report by Taiwan’s Economic Daily, Foxconn Group has achieved another triumph in its AI endeavors. The company has secured orders for over 50% of NVIDIA’s HGX GPU base boards, marking the first instance of such an achievement. Adding to this success, Foxconn had previously acquired an order for another NVIDIA DGX GPU base board, solidifying its pivotal role in NVIDIA’s two most crucial AI chip base board orders.

The report highlights that in terms of supply chain source, Foxconn Group stands as the exclusive provider of NVIDIA’s AI chip modules (GPU Modules). As for NVIDIA’s AI motherboards, the suppliers encompass Foxconn, Quanta, Inventec, and Super Micro.

Industry experts analyze that DGX and HGX are currently NVIDIA’s two most essential AI servers, and Foxconn Group has undertaken the monumental task of fulfilling the large order for NVIDIA’s AI chipboards through its subsidiary, Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII). Having previously secured orders for NVIDIA’s DGX base boards, Foxconn Group has now garnered additional orders from FII for the HGX base boards. This expanded supply constitutes more than half of the total, solidifying Foxconn Group’s role as a primary supplier for NVIDIA’s two critical AI chip base board orders.

Furthermore, Foxconn’s involvement doesn’t end with AI chip modules, base boards, and motherboards. The company’s engagement extends downstream to servers and server cabinets, creating a vertically integrated approach that covers the entire AI ecosystem.

[News] US Tech Giants Unite for AI Server Domination, Boosting Taiwan Supply Chain

According to the news from Commercial Times, in a recent press conference, the four major American cloud service providers (CSPs) collectively expressed their intention to expand their investment in AI application services. Simultaneously, they are continuing to enhance their cloud infrastructure. Apple has also initiated its foray into AI development, and both Intel and AMD have emphasized the robust demand for AI servers. These developments are expected to provide a significant boost to the post-market prospects of Taiwan’s AI server supply chain.

Industry insiders have highlighted the ongoing growth of the AI spillover effect, benefiting various sectors ranging from GPU modules, substrates, cooling systems, power supplies, chassis, and rails, to PCB manufacturers.

The American CSP players, including Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon, which recently released their financial reports, have demonstrated growth in their cloud computing and AI-related service segments in their latest quarterly performance reports. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are particularly competitive in the cloud services arena, and all have expressed optimistic outlooks for future operations.

The direct beneficiaries among Taiwan’s cloud data center suppliers are those in Tier 1, who are poised to reap positive effects on their average selling prices (ASP) and gross margins, driven by the strong demand for AI servers from these CSP giants in the latter half of the year.

Among them, the ODM manufacturers with over six years of collaboration with NVIDIA in multi-GPU architecture AI high-performance computing/cloud computing, including Quanta, Wistron, Wistron, Inventec, Foxconn, and Gigabyte, are expected to see operational benefits further reflected in the latter half of the year. Foxconn and Inventec are the main suppliers of GPU modules and GPU substrates, respectively, and are likely to witness noticeable shipment growth starting in the third quarter.

Furthermore, AI servers not only incorporate multiple GPU modules but also exhibit improvements in aspects such as chassis height, weight, and thermal design power (TDP) compared to standard servers. As a result, cooling solution providers like Asia Vital Components, Auras Technology, and SUNON; power supply companies such as Delta Electronics and Lite-On Technology; chassis manufacturers Chenbro; rail industry players like King Slide, and PCB/CCL manufacturers such as EMC, GCE are also poised to benefit from the increasing demand for AI servers.

Why Laptops Are Speeding Up the Rise of Vietnam?

As we look at the global economic growth rates for 2022, one country’s GDP performance stands out: Vietnam. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Vietnam’s estimated GDP growth rate for 2022 is 7%, compared to 2.6% in 2021, making it the most fast-growing country among the neighbouring countries.

Undoubtedly, the country’s impressive performance is largely due to the global supply chain’s migration to the country, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the trade war between the US and China.

Pandemic and Trade War as Catalysts for Supply Chain Relocation

Long before the supply chain’s recent move, Samsung had already made aggressive investments by allocating 60% of Samsung Galaxy phones’ production in Vietnam. As a result of that, Vietnam’s electronics manufacturing exports surpassed its largest industry, textiles, a decade ago.

Over the last couple of years, the increasing tension between U.S. and China’s lockdown during the pandemic has made the leading brands aware of the high geopolitical risks as well as the importance of supply chain diversification. These concerns forced them to vigorously re-evaluate the plan to move their manufacturing factories to Vietnam, mitigating the risks they are exposed to.

Laptops: The Last Piece of Puzzle

In this migration, Apple and Dell have been the most proactive brands. After Shanghai’s lockdown, Apple has chosen Vietnam as its second-largest production base for laptops, tablets, and TWS earphones. Luxshare has already attracted attentions for building an AirPod production line in Vietnam, but not until recently, the laptop OEMs in Taiwan have geared up for expanding their investments there: a couple days ago Quanta Computer just announced a $50 million investment to establish a Vietnamese subsidiary to produce MacBooks; Foxconn, another key supplier of Apple’s macbook, is reported to begin their trial run for macbook after an $9 billion investment in 2022 for capacity increase.

On the other hand, it is said that Dell had actively reviewed its suppliers and component sources before 2022 to ensure the stable supply for their bidding market in the North American. As Dell becomes more aggressive in shifting their production lines from China to other locations, suppliers such as Compal and Wistron have also been actively building laptop assembly lines in Vietnam for the past two years.

A flexible production model is on the horizon

In the past, most OEMs considered Vietnam as a backup due to the complex logistic management potentially caused by the relocation of production lines. However, given that the most complicated and rigid laptop supply chains have begun to move, it is generally believed that this represents a solid trend where Vietnam is almost set to take over China’s position.

According to TrendForce, Vietnam is projected to account for 5% of global laptop shipments by 2023, which marks a notable increase from less than 1% just a year ago, making the country the second-largest laptop production base after China.

However, from the perspective of supply chain risk diversification, brand customers demand production models that not only reduce over-concentration in China but also enable quick response to possible contingencies at each production base.

That means even if laptop production is concentrated in China and Vietnam, if there is an urgent situation, OEM factories’ production lines in other regions must be able to provide immediate support. Such production models will inevitably reshape the supply chain landscape moving forward.
