TSMC officially gives the green light to the second fab in Kumamoto, Japan! On January 6th, TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS), DENSO Corporation (DENSO), and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) jointly announced further investment in TSMC’s Japanese subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM).
The collaboration is expected to construct JASM’s second fab in Japan, dedicated to the 6/7-nanometer advanced process. The new facility is expected to commence operations by the end of 2027, with a total investment exceeding USD 20 billion, strongly supported by the Japanese government.
TSMC has stated that in this investment venture with JASM, TSMC, SSS, DENSO, and Toyota hold approximately 86.5%, 6.0%, 5.5%, and 2.0% of JASM shares, respectively. Toyota Motor Corporation is a new major shareholder following this capital increase, indicating its potential involvement in automotive electronics initiatives.
TSMC has further indicated that the construction of JASM’s second fab in Japan is set to commence at the end of 2024. The expansion in production capacity is expected to optimize overall cost structure and supply chain efficiency.
With two fabs in Kumamoto, TSMC anticipates in the press release that JASM’s total monthly production capacity will exceed 100,000 12-inch wafers, offering process technologies ranging from 40nm, 22/28nm, 12/16nm, to 6/7nm for automotive, industrial, consumer, and high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Capacity planning may be further adjusted based on customer demand.
For JASM’s first fab, it is planned to commence production by the end of the year. The initial facility, costing USD 8.6 billion, received subsidies of JPY 478 billion (approximately USD 3.23 billion) from the Japanese government.
The primary process of the first fab are 22/28nm and 12/16nm, with a monthly production capacity of around 50,000 12-inch wafers. Located in Kikuyo-cho, Kikuyo-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, construction of the facility was announced in November 2021, ground was broken in April 2022, and construction was completed within two years.
JASM’s first fab is set to open on February 24, 2024, with mass production scheduled by the end of the year. The facility is a joint venture between Taiwan and Japan, with TSMC holding the majority of shares, Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC) of Japan holding approximately 20%, and Toyota Group’s DENSO holding about 10%.

In a bid to compete with rivals like Tesla, who conduct in-house research and development of advanced chips for automotive applications, Japanese automakers have reportedly established a new organization to collaboratively research and develop advanced automotive chips, integrating their technologies and designs.
According to a report by Nikkei, automakers including Toyota have established a new organization called the “Automotive SoC Research Association” (temporarily referred as ASRA), joining forces to develop advanced chips for applications like autonomous driving.
Established in December in Nagoya, ASRA is set to commence research on SoC products with a process of 10nm or more advanced nodes starting in 2024. In addition to Toyota, other automakers such as Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, and Japanese enterprises including Renesas Electronics and Socionext have also joined the initiative.
According to the report, the trend of automakers intensifying in-house development of automotive chips is growing. The report further indicates that semiconductor giants in the United States, such as NVIDIA and Qualcomm, are also developing high-performance SoCs for automotive use.
Leading electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has opted for in-house development due to dissatisfaction with limited choices, and their self-developed SoCs are already actively deployed in their vehicles.
On the other hand, Chinese automaker NIO, for example, possesses semiconductor research and development teams in both China and the United States. They have successfully developed semiconductor products used for controlling Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology.

The world’s largest automaker, Toyota (TM-US), announced on Thursday, the 19th, that its North American division has reached an agreement with Tesla (TSLA-US). Starting in 2025, Toyota’s electric vehicles will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS).
Prior to Toyota’s announcement, companies like Ford, General Motors, and BMW had already joined the Tesla NACS alliance, providing customers with access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.
In 2025, Toyota will integrate the NACS interface into specific Toyota and Lexus BEVs, including a new three-row electric SUV produced at Toyota’s Kentucky plant.
Vehicle owners can connect to Tesla’s widespread North American charging infrastructure, comprising over 84,000 charging stations, including Level 2 and DC fast chargers, using Toyota and Lexus apps.
Owners or lessees of Toyota and Lexus vehicles using the Combined Charging System (CCS) specification will have the option to purchase NACS charging connectors starting in 2025.
Notably, we have anticipated that by 2026, the global tally of public charging stations will soar to 16 million, marking an impressive threefold increase from 2023 figures. As this unfolds, the global ownership of NEVs—which includes both PHEVs and BEVs—will surge to 96 million.

Source to LG Energy Solution, LG Energy Solution, and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (Toyota) today announced that they have signed a supply agreement for lithium-ion battery modules to be used in Toyota battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that will be assembled in the United States.
Under the contract, LG Energy Solution will supply automotive battery modules at an annual capacity of 20GWh starting from 2025. The battery modules, consisting of high-nickel NCMA (nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum) pouch-type cells, will be manufactured in LG Energy Solution’s Michigan facility.
The innovative power solutions will support Toyota’s expanding line of BEVs, part of its multi-pathway product strategy, including a new BEV model that will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in 2025. They will also help further Toyota’s vehicle electrification initiatives, as it aspires to offer 30 BEV models globally across its Toyota and Lexus brand nameplates and produce up to 3.5 million BEVs annually by 2030.
“At Toyota, our goal is to reduce carbon emissions as much as possible, as fast as possible,” said Tetsuo “Ted” Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America. “Having secure supplies of lithium-ion batteries at scale with a long-term relationship to support Toyota’s multi-pathway approach and growth plans for BEVs in North America is critical to achieving our manufacturing and carbon reduction plans. Working with LG Energy Solution, we are excited to be able to offer products that will provide the performance and quality our customers expect.”
To fulfill the supply agreement, LG Energy Solution will invest KRW 4 trillion (approximately USD 3 billion) in its Michigan facility to establish new production lines for battery cells and modules exclusively for Toyota, with completion slated for 2025. Initially, the battery modules will go to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky to be assembled into battery packs and equipped onto BEVs.
The agreement brings together LG Energy Solution’s proven capabilities in manufacturing top-quality battery cells and modules at scale, and Toyota’s advanced technologies in battery packs to create a product using LG Energy Solution’s innovative power solution which optimizes battery system performance, providing peace of mind and further enhancing the BEV customer experience. LG Energy Solution continues to enhance battery safety, including with respect to its thermal management for its high-nickel NCMA batteries.

The landmark deal represents LG Energy Solution’s largest single supply agreement secured outside of joint venture agreements. According to the latest data from TrendForce, car sales across 37 regional markets (as indicated in the notes under the table above) in August totaled 5.55 million vehicles, representing an increase of nearly 1% compared with July. This modest growth can be attributed to the upcoming launch of new vehicle models by automakers for the fall season. Some consumers were anticipating price reductions on existing models, while others were waiting for the release of new ones. Therefore, it is expected that car sales will be concentrated in the month of September.
The rankings of the top 10 car brands for August remained the same compared with July. The top three brands, in order, were Toyota, Volkswagen, and Honda. In August, the Japanese car market experienced a seasonal slowdown, leading to a drop in sales for most Japanese automakers. Compared with the previous month, Toyota posted a decline of 2.6%, whereas Honda posted a slight increase of 0.8%.
Chinese automaker BYD surpassed Ford to become the fourth-largest global car brand in terms of car sales for August. Despite the weakening demand in the domestic car market, BYD was not significantly affected as all of its offerings are new energy vehicles. BYD saw a 5% increase in car sales compared with July and was just 0.1 percentage point behind Honda in market share, which held the third position. Japanese automakers can still rely on demand from regional markets such as Southeast Asia to drive their vehicle sales. Therefore, accelerating the pace of overseas expansion is a key challenge for BYD if it seeks to surpass Honda on a global scale.
As for Ford, its performance in August showed a contraction in sales in Europe and the US. With a decline of 6.7% compared with the previous month, Ford dropped to sixth place.
While the launch of new vehicle models this fall is expected to boost new car sales, several factors continue to influence regional markets. These factors include the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers in the US and Russia’s announcement on September 21st regarding restrictions on the exportation of gasoline and diesel. Russia’s actions could once again impact Europe’s energy supply and lead to a surge in oil prices. Such development could also disrupt governments’ efforts to ease inflation. If inflation heats up again, the consumer market might weaken further, and central banks could be compelled to raise interest rates once more.
China is currently stimulating domestic demand through various policies, but abnormal weather conditions in various parts of the country since the summer have affected local sales. In general, TrendForce believes that as the fourth quarter approaches, automakers will do their utmost to ensure smooth production, meet orders promptly, and spur sales during the year-end holiday season. They will strive to minimize the impact of the reduction in demand visibility caused by the latest economic turbulence.
