TrendForce Projects AMOLED Penetration Rate in Global Smartphone Market to Exceed 20% in 2016 Due to Surging Demand

Demand for AMOLED panels has taken off as there are strong indications that Apple will introduce AMOLED display to the iPhone series in 2017. The latest research from WitsView, a division of TrendForce, anticipates that the AMOLED penetration rate in the global smartphone market will surpass 20% by the end of this year and reach 40% in 2019.

The AMOLED technology is rapidly gaining acceptance in the smartphone and wearable device markets. In addition to having a wide color gamut, AMOLED panels expand the range of design options for displays because they can be made on substrates that are light, thin and flexible. On the other hand, the adoption of AMOLED in the tablet market has been tepid even though tablets also have similar weight and thickness requirements as other mobile devices. The penetration rate of AMOLED-equipped products in the total tablet shipments worldwide for 2015 was 2.5%, according to the latest research by WitsView, a division of TrendForce.

TV Brands Have Radically Altered Their LCD Panel Purchasing Plans to Prepare for Peak Shipment Season in Second of Half of 2016

Shipments of LCD TV sets worldwide are projected to reach 219 million units in 2016, representing a year-on-year growth of about 1.5%, according to the latest report from WitsView, a division of TrendForce. Combined shipments from South Korean brands will be around the same level as last year’s at 77 million units, while the combined shipments from the top six Chinese brands will register a year-on-year growth rate of 6.2%.

TrendForce Reports LCD Panel Prices Will Recover Despite an Increase in Market Supply During Second Quarter

The first quarter conventionally is when the LCD panel market has abundant supply. However, the February earthquake in southern Taiwan and Samsung Display (SDC) having problems with transitioning to a new manufacturing process resulted in some loss of the panel industry’s overall capacity during the period. Furthermore, panel makers gained confidence in the market as the efforts to consume excess TV panel inventories were more efficient than anticipated.

Large-Size LCD Panel Shipments Were Strong Across All Applications in May and Posted Monthly Growth of 6.5%, According to TrendForce

The latest LCD panel shipment report from WitsView, a division of TrendForce, finds large-size panel shipments totaled 60.25 million units in May, up 6.5% from the prior month. The strong monthly shipments across all applications were attributed to the anticipation of rising prices and increased inventory-replenishment efforts. Among the applications, the notebook panel market had the best shipment performance.
