Hardware Market for Mobile 3D Sensing Will Expand at a CAGR of 209% From 2017 to 2020, Says TrendForce

Major technology companies have been developing solutions and platforms for 3D sensing, which is expected to be featured on the upcoming iPhone devices. Market intelligence TrendForce anticipates that from 2017 onward, the market for 3D sensing solutions used in mobile devices will witness leaping growth. The total value of the global market for 3D sensing modules used in mobile devices is estimated to reach US$1.5 billion in 2017 and is forecast to grow at a massive CAGR of 209% to around US$14 billion in 2020. Note that the 3D sensing module that is being discussed includes IR transmitter and receiver components.

The latest analysis by WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reveals that China is set to overtake South Korea this year as the leading producing region for large-size LCD panels. In terms of area, China’s share of the global production capacity for large-size panels will surpass South Korea’s in 2017. By 2020, China’s share of the global capacity area may reach around 50%.

According to market intelligence firm TrendForce, major vertical markets such as manufacturing, transportation and healthcare will rapidly adopt 5G in addition to the consumer market. For mobile network operators, their traditional telephony and data services are bringing less average revenue per user than before. Thus, upgrading to 5G will help diversify and expand their revenue base.

TrendForce Says Pursuit of Wider Color Gamut Will Drive Up Production Costs of LCMs by 3% to 10%

The fierce competition in the TV market has driven brand vendors to continually improve the image colors and qualities of their respective product models. In recent years, South Korean panel makers Samsung Display (SDC) and LG Display (LGD), along with their Taiwanese counterparts, have developed various technologies to enhance features such as wide color gamut (WCG) for their products. Because of their ongoing efforts, WitsView, a division of TrendForce, expects the production costs of liquid crystal display modules (LCMs) for TVs will go up. Depending on the solution type for achieving WCG, the cost increase could range from 3% to 10%.

TrendForce Raises Its Projection on the Share of In-Cell Solutions in the 2017 Smartphone Market to Around 32% as TDDI Approaches Maturation

The share of In-Cell solutions in the global smartphone market is estimated to reach 31.9% by the end of 2017, according to the latest research on touch display solutions by WitsView, a division of TrendForce. This latest share figure for In-Cell solutions, which is an upward revision from the earlier projection of 29.6%, is mainly attributed to the near maturation of IC products for TDDI (Touch with Display Driver Integration) as well as their rapid adoption in the panel industry.
